G80 problems

Ok, I took my truck in to the dealer, because the G80 is not acting right. Sometimes, it wil not disengage, which causes tire slippage & drivetrain bind, and other times, it will not engage, cuaasing the right rear tire to spin only.

It only fails to engage when I am backing up thru my side yard. I hear a rapid clicking noise, and the right rear tire spins, and the left rear does nothing.

The answer I got from the dealer, is that the G80 locker DOES NOT work in reverse. My answer was wrong, and if it is, then what good is it ?

Thye seem to be confusing torque reversal with reverse torque.

I agree, that when you reverse torque, IE go from forward to backward, that it will disengage momentarily during the direction (torque) reversal, but once that is done, it reengages again. Thye are saying that it wil not work in reverse becasue of this 'torque reversal'.

Supposedly they had their senior and best mechanics on this for 2 days, and they have determined that it is working fine.

has anyone else been told this same lame story ??

as far as I know it works in both directions. Not really sure why they would say it doenst work in reverse. Did they offer to have a tech go on a ride along with you? I kinda at loss as to why it would only work in one direction though. Im not wondering if the shaft that counter weights ride on has stripped, that might be the rapid clicking that your hearing.

Mine works in reverse. I know because I just left 2 even skid marks backing up steep concrete ramp.

There are two nice, black, even length stripes on the sidewalk in front of my driveway that prove G80 works in reverse!:D

the g80 will not engage if you floor it or get on it hard. this protects it from breaking. the g80 sometimes has trouble disengaging, this is normal. if it does it everytime it tries to disengage, thats not normal.

the g80 works in reverse, if it dosent for you, thats a problem

No, the real problem is 2 out of 4 dealerships I called said it does not work in reverse.

I told them it clicks rapidly when it does it, and they haven't even pulled the diff cover to see if anything is wrong...they are trying to troubleshoot it using books & drawings.

BTW, I am moving slower then the average person walks when it doesn't engage to AVOID tearing up my yard wh8ile backing up to hook up my boat.

Maybe you should just think of a way to duplicate the problem at the dealership, some of them have lots of vacant space with grass/gravel. Once the mechanic can duplicate it, he can work on it until it's fixed -- assuming you find an honest mechanic, sounds like you had bad luck so far.

It's really annoying to get reps/techs who say "there is no problem" and even make up explanations, when the problem is right in front of you. I haven't been given the run-around with my truck yet, but with computers and home electronics the techs do this all the time. Sometimes it takes a bunch of calls just to get stuff replaced.

If a dealer ship ever treats me that way and lies about a problem then I will change brands . I think that is bullshit that they are lying to you and saying it does not work in reverse . That just make my blood boil with hate . I love my truck and all but if a company is a **** then they should of been just left to die. GM was a dead dog and that was not long ago it has no right to give customers the run about.

If i was in your position and was treated like that . I would never buy a other GM product again . So hopefully I never get treated like that lol .

Show them the video above or the many other videos on Youtube that show exactly the Eaton G80 work. They all say it works in both directions

thats not a logical reason to avoid GM products, all dealers are diffrent, some have terrible service and customer support, other have amazing service and customer support

A good company will run a tight ship and will have customer support uniformed cross all its out lets . GM needs to retrain its employees or managers about customer support . If I walk into any Holiday IN (a hotel chain) in Canada they will treat me like I am a king.

1) They claim they can not get internet at work, I offered to show them the video and explain each part and how it works

2) Their service manager says they were told it did not work in reverse by the gm tech rep from the dealer side of customer assistance

3) I have offered to show them how it works at my house, but it is not 100% consistent, sometimes it does, sometimes it don't.

4) I offered to try and duplicate it here, but since it would require putting a tire on their grass, they said no.

And oh yeah, they still haven't even opened the diff up to see if it has pieces parts inside, or if new fluid would fix the issue.

I do think I got the service manager thinking, as I explained to him how it works, he read all the tech documents he had on it, and it never said it only worked in one direction.

I also asked him this "If it only works in forward, then why are their 2 governer weights mounted opposing each other 180 deg out ? Mounting them this way will allows one weight to engage the lock bar when rotating forward, and the other weight can only engage the lock bar if the axle is turning in reverse. Why have 2 weigfhts in the diff if it isn't designed to work in 2 directions ?"

I also posed this question to him, "IF the G80 only works in a forward direction, then why do I get a rapid clicking noise coming from the rear diff when I am backing up and only the right rear tire is spinning ?" The noise tells me something ain't right inside the rear axle. he aasdi they couldn't duplicate it, I said ok, but I want it in the service record that I brought it to your attention, because the track record with these G80 diffs is once something starts going bad, it ain't long before it all grenades. I want it documented so you can't claim I abused it the weekend before and that's why it broke.

I did tell them tonight, that if they will not fix the issue, I will go to another dealership for my service who understands that the G80 does work in both directions.

I also complained about the excessive road noise in the cab, and the driveshaft clunking. They also told me they were normal and it was not a known problem.

Well, once I gave them the bulletin #'s, they ordered the parts for the driveshaft. Still fighting on the road noise in the cab, as their techs say it is normal.

I even told them the front pinion seal is leaking (2nd time now I have told them) and their reply was they had to put dye in it and they had to see the dye on the outside of the seal, and if it was not enough showing, they would not replace it, even tho it was leaking.

It seems like businesses hire two different types of people for the same position:

1. customer service representatives

2. customer reassurance and wellness professionals

I guess you either have to find a dealership that hires type #1 or find a national GM customer service number.

Goodyear tires = road noise in the cab; only one cure that I know of.
